Where You Get Electrolytes

When Plain Water Is Not Enough
Water alone stops being enough once you lose a meaningful amount of sodium along with the fluid. Drinking plain water back replaces the volume. It does not replace what was in it. That gap shows up in three situations.
Heavy, sustained sweating is the most common one. Exercise past roughly 60 to 90 minutes, especially in heat, or any physical labor that soaks a shirt through, pulls out enough sodium, and some potassium and magnesium, that a sports drink or electrolyte mix genuinely helps performance and recovery. Who Should Be Careful With Electrolyte Supplements
Electrolyte supplements are not a blanket recommendation. Two groups should treat them differently than a healthy adult training for under an hour.
If you exercise moderately for less than an hour and eat a typical diet, you almost never need an added electrolyte product. Food and water already cover it. Adding more sodium on top of a normal diet has no benefit, and it works against blood pressure goals for some people.
If you have kidney disease, heart failure, or take blood pressure medications like ACE inhibitors, ARBs, or potassium-sparing diuretics, talk to your prescribing clinician before adding a potassium or general electrolyte supplement. Those conditions and medications already raise blood potassium. Stacking a supplement on top can push it into a dangerous range.
