What Your Smart Scale's Metabolic Age Number Means

A bioelectrical-impedance estimate that isn't a validated biological-age test
Metabolic age is a number smart scales generate by comparing an estimated basal metabolic rate, calculated from bioelectrical impedance, against population averages for each age group. No major medical body has validated it as a biomarker. Manufacturers keep the exact formula behind the number private, and the same person can get a different metabolic age reading from two different scales on the same day.
Smart scales calculate metabolic age. A lab or a doctor does not measure it. Manufacturers like Renpho, Withings, and Tanita each build the number from a formula that estimates basal metabolic rate (BMR, the calories your body burns at rest) using bioelectrical impedance, then compares that estimate against population-average BMR data for each age group.
None of those companies publish the exact formula behind the comparison. That's the detail most explainers of the term skip over. A smart scale calculates metabolic age in two steps. First it estimates your basal metabolic rate. Then it compares that estimate to an age-group average. The scale sends a weak electrical current through your body, using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and measures how much resistance the current meets. Fat, muscle, and water conduct electricity at different rates, so the resistance reading lets the device estimate body composition, which it then feeds into a proprietary formula to estimate BMR.
The scale then checks which age group's typical BMR your estimated number matches most closely, and reports that age back to you as your "metabolic age." A 45-year-old whose estimated BMR matches the typical BMR of a 30-year-old gets a metabolic age of 30. Manufacturers do not publish the population reference data or the exact BMR formula each device uses. The math behind any single scale's number is not independently verifiable.
Why Do Different Scales Give Different Metabolic Ages?
Two BIA scales can disagree on the same person's metabolic age because each brand uses its own unpublished formula and reference population. Hydration level changes the reading too, since BIA depends on how well the body conducts an electrical current, and water conducts differently than fat or muscle tissue. Stepping on a scale after a workout, a meal, or a stretch of dehydration can shift the number with no real change in body composition at all.
That variability has a practical consequence. Body-composition researchers treat consumer BIA scales as useful for tracking a trend on the same device over time, rather than as a precise one-time measurement. Comparing a reading from one brand of scale against a reading from a different brand is closer to comparing two different questions than to repeating the same test.
Is Metabolic Age a Real, Validated Test?
No major medical body has validated metabolic age as a clinical biomarker. Measures like HbA1c or fasting insulin carry published reference ranges and diagnostic thresholds; metabolic age carries neither. It is a marketing framing built on top of a real underlying measurement, BMR, which does have legitimate clinical and research use on its own. The age-comparison layer turns that real number into a score with no independent validation behind it.
That doesn't make the underlying BMR estimate meaningless. The "age" framing adds a layer of consumer-facing simplification that a clinician reading a body-composition report typically skips past, in favor of the BMR and body-fat-percentage numbers underneath it.
What Determines Your Metabolic Age Reading?
Muscle mass is the single biggest lever. Muscle tissue burns more calories at rest than fat tissue does, so more muscle raises estimated BMR and typically lowers the reported metabolic age. Age itself plays a role independent of body composition, since resting metabolic rate tends to decline gradually across adulthood. Hydration status, the time of day, and how recently you ate or exercised all shift the BIA reading the calculation depends on. That's why the same person can see a different number from one morning to the next on the same scale.
When Metabolic Age Gives a Misleading Reading
A muscular athlete and a sedentary adult who weigh the same amount can get very different metabolic-age readings from the same scale, because the calculation responds to estimated muscle-to-fat ratio rather than to weight or BMI. That's the case the metric handles well. Here's one it handles badly: someone who is dehydrated, has just finished a workout, or steps on the scale at an unusual time of day can see their reading swing by several years with no real change in muscle or fat at all. BIA measures electrical resistance through body water, and water content is exactly what shifts with hydration and exercise.
That failure mode matters for how you read a single number. One reading, taken once, is weak evidence of anything. A trend measured on the same device, at a similar time of day and hydration state, over several weeks, filters out most of that noise. It's the more informative way to use the number.
Metabolic Age vs. a DEXA Scan
A DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan measures body composition directly, using two X-ray energy levels to distinguish bone, fat, and lean tissue, instead of estimating it from electrical resistance the way a BIA scale does. Body-composition researchers use DEXA as the reference method for validating other tools, precisely because it doesn't depend on hydration the way BIA does. A DEXA report gives fat mass, lean mass, and bone density directly. It does not output a "metabolic age" figure at all, because that framing is a consumer-scale convention that DEXA software never applies. Can You Lower Your Metabolic Age?
Building muscle through resistance training is the most direct lever a person has. Added muscle mass raises estimated resting calorie burn, which most consumer scales' formulas translate into a younger metabolic-age reading. Reducing body fat percentage while holding muscle mass steady works the same direction. Neither change happens overnight. A reading that shifts sharply between two consecutive days is far more likely to reflect hydration or measurement noise than a real change in body composition.

Is a lower metabolic age always better?
Generally, yes as a direction. Does metabolic age affect fertility or hormone levels?

Why is my metabolic age higher than my real age?

Is metabolic age the same as biological age?
