Is Retatrutide FDA Approved? Current Status and Timeline

Medically reviewed by Dr. Michael Teplitsky, MD Last reviewed 2026-10-22

Lilly plans to file in early 2027, and nothing sold online is the approved drug.

Retatrutide is an investigational drug developed by Eli Lilly and is not approved by the FDA or any global regulator. Eli Lilly plans to submit a Biologics License Application in the first quarter of 2027, with standard federal review taking 10 to 12 months. Products sold online are not the approved drug, are not FDA-verified, and cannot lawfully be marketed as treatments.

Retatrutide is not FDA approved. Retatrutide remains an investigational drug, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not authorized it for human use outside clinical trials. Eli Lilly stated in its second-quarter 2026 financial results, filed in July 2026, that it plans to submit a Biologics License Application (BLA) in the first quarter of 2027. As of mid-October 2026 reporting, Eli Lilly had not yet submitted that application, and FDA had set no decision date. Any product currently offered for sale online under this name is not an approved medication.

Current Regulatory Status

Retatrutide currently holds investigational status and has received no market approval from any public health authority. The compound is a triple hormone receptor agonist developed by Eli Lilly that activates glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and glucagon receptors. Lilly publishes its own overview at what to know about retatrutide.

Lilly is testing retatrutide in its TRIUMPH phase 3 program. That research covers three distinct conditions: obesity, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and knee osteoarthritis pain. Eli Lilly has stated that data collected across the TRIUMPH trials will form the global regulatory submission package for those indications.

What the Sleep Apnea Trial News Changes

The trial presentation does not change the drug's legal status. On October 22, 2026, the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) posted on X that full results from two phase 3 trials, TRIUMPH-1-OSA and TRIUMPH-2-OSA, were presented at the SLEEP Europe 2026 congress. The post said that trial participants who received retatrutide showed greater reductions in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) measurements than participants who received a placebo.

Trial results are not approval. Pharmaceutical sponsors must first finish studies and organize the data into a formal submission dossier. FDA then decides whether to accept the application for review and, if it does, reviews it, as outlined in the FDA drug development and approval process.

From Filing to Approval

A federal review for a new biologic drug typically requires roughly 10 to 12 months from the date the agency accepts an application. Because Eli Lilly plans to submit its retatrutide BLA in the first quarter of 2027, no FDA decision date exists. The agency has not published a target action date.

The independent site Peptide Decoding estimates an FDA decision between late 2027 and mid-2028. Peptide Decoding calls a prescription realistically 2028.

Can You Legally Buy Retatrutide

It is unlawful to market retatrutide as a medical therapy in the United States because the drug lacks an approved marketing label. Products advertised as retatrutide for sale on commercial websites are not the approved medication because no approved product exists. Clinical trial participation is the only lawful route to receive retatrutide today, and trials are listed on ClinicalTrials.gov.

On June 16, 2026, Public Citizen reported that FDA had issued 14 warning letters since 2024 to businesses marketing retatrutide. Public Citizen stated that as of May 2026, 11 of those 14 vendors still advertised retatrutide or related unapproved peptides, and 8 still sold retatrutide.

Public Citizen cited at least 14 reported hospitalizations connected to retatrutide in the FDA adverse event system as of June 2026. Online merchants routinely label vials as for research use only and not for human consumption. The purity and concentration of peptides shipped from overseas facilities fluctuate substantially, and none undergo government verification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is retatrutide FDA approved right now?

No. Retatrutide is an investigational drug candidate that has not been approved by the FDA or any international regulatory authority. It remains in clinical development.

When will retatrutide be approved by the FDA?

The FDA has not established an approval timeline. Eli Lilly stated in financial filings that it intends to submit a Biologics License Application in the first quarter of 2027. Standard federal review requires roughly 10 to 12 months after filing acceptance. The independent site Peptide Decoding estimates an FDA decision between late 2027 and mid-2028; that is not an FDA or Lilly date.

Is retatrutide legal to purchase online?

No company can lawfully market or sell retatrutide as a treatment in the United States. Vials sold online under research labels are unapproved, vary in purity, and are not verified by federal regulators. Clinical trials cataloged on ClinicalTrials.gov represent the only legal avenue to receive the drug today.

What is the TRIUMPH clinical program?

TRIUMPH is Eli Lilly's phase 3 trial program evaluating retatrutide for obesity, obstructive sleep apnea, and knee osteoarthritis pain. Eli Lilly plans to use the TRIUMPH clinical data package to support its global regulatory submissions.

Do the sleep apnea study results mean retatrutide will be available soon?

No. Presentation of clinical trial data at medical congresses demonstrates research progress, but it does not grant market approval. Eli Lilly must still submit a Biologics License Application, and the FDA must conduct its formal review before commercial availability can occur.
