Glucomannan has the most consistent clinical trial support of any ingredient in this review. It is a soluble fiber taken from the root of the konjac plant.
In the stomach it absorbs many times its weight in water. That expands it into a gel, which adds bulk and can increase feelings of fullness.
Several small randomized trials have found modest weight loss with glucomannan compared to placebo. The difference was generally a few pounds over 8 to 12 weeks. Effects were larger when people also followed a reduced-calorie diet.
Studies have typically used doses of 1 to 4 grams a day. Researchers split this into smaller doses taken with a full glass of water before meals.
Glucomannan carries a specific safety note beyond general fiber effects. Tablet forms have been linked to case reports of throat or esophageal blockage when taken without enough water. Anyone with swallowing difficulties or a history of bowel narrowing should ask a doctor before trying it.
Caffeine, Green Tea Extract, and Capsaicin: The Thermogenic Group
These three ingredients share a real, if modest, mechanism for reducing appetite or raising calorie burn. Caffeine is a stimulant that increases resting energy expenditure and can blunt hunger for a few hours. Tolerance builds with regular use, but the short-term thermogenic effect is well documented.
Green tea extract combines caffeine with catechins, plant compounds including EGCG. Research on green tea catechins has found small increases in calorie burn. Modest fat loss followed over several months compared with placebo, but the effect sizes stayed consistently small.
Capsaicin is the compound that makes chili peppers hot. It activates a receptor called TRPV1. That receptor is tied to higher energy expenditure and reduced hunger signaling in some studies.

The Weak-Evidence Group: Garcinia Cambogia and Others
Garcinia cambogia is the most heavily studied ingredient in this weaker tier, and the results are disappointing. Its active compound, hydroxycitric acid, looked promising in early animal research. Rigorous human trials since then have mostly found little to no meaningful weight-loss benefit over placebo.
Garcinia cambogia also carries a real safety flag. Case reports and published reviews have linked it to liver injury in some users. That history is a reason for real caution with this particular ingredient.
The remaining ingredients share a pattern of limited human research and small trial sizes. Caralluma fimbriata has a few small human trials suggesting reduced waist size or appetite, but the evidence base stays thin. Gymnema sylvestre is studied mainly for blood sugar effects, not appetite, so its appetite-suppressant reputation rests on weaker ground.
Conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, has been tested for body composition changes with mixed results. It also commonly causes digestive side effects at studied doses.
Fenugreek has small trials focused mostly on blood sugar and testosterone. Direct evidence for appetite suppression stays limited. Yerba mate has long traditional use for appetite suppression, but most of its measurable effect seems to come from caffeine rather than a unique mechanism.
