Wegovy Pill Dosage: Dosing Schedule, Chart, and Directions

Medically reviewed by Dr. Michael Teplitsky, MD Last reviewed 2026-10-14

Label dosing schedule and directions.

The FDA label lists four daily dosage steps, from 1.5 mg through the 25 mg maintenance dose. It also outlines directions for taking the tablet, missed doses, switching between tablets and injections, and contraindications.

The recommended Wegovy pill dosage starts at 1.5 mg once daily for days 1 through 30, goes to 4 mg on days 31 through 60 and 9 mg on days 61 through 90, then 25 mg once daily from day 91 onward. Take one tablet orally once daily on an empty stomach in the morning with water (up to 4 ounces), and wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other oral medications. WEGOVY tablets are indicated, in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, to reduce excess body weight and maintain weight reduction long term in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one comorbid condition, and to reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight. Your prescriber sets your plan.

Wegovy Pill Dosing Schedule

The label's Table 2 lists four dose steps. The label states to follow the dosage escalation to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal adverse reactions. Patients initiate treatment at 1.5 mg once daily and progress through two intermediate strengths before reaching the 25 mg maintenance dosage.

DaysOnce-Daily DoseStage
Days 1 through 301.5 mgStarting dosage
Days 31 through 604 mgDosage escalation
Days 61 through 909 mgDosage escalation
Day 91 and onward25 mgMaintenance dosage

If a patient experiences tolerability difficulties during the titration phase, the prescribing information directs clinicians to consider delaying dosage escalation. Once a patient reaches the recommended maintenance dosage of 25 mg taken orally once daily, the label says not to take more than one tablet per day.

How to Take the Wegovy Pill

  1. Take one tablet by mouth once daily on an empty stomach in the morning with water (up to 4 ounces).
  2. Do not take WEGOVY tablets with other liquids besides water.
  3. Swallow tablets whole; do not split, crush, chew, or dissolve in any solution.
  4. After taking a tablet, wait at least 30 minutes before eating food, drinking beverages, or taking other oral medications.

What the Label Says About Missed Doses and Dose Changes

If you miss a dose of the Wegovy pill, the prescribing information instructs you to skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule the following day. Do not take more than one tablet per day. Dose adjustments and schedule pauses during titration are clinical decisions made in partnership with your prescribing physician. If a patient does not tolerate a dose during dosage escalation, the label says to consider delaying dosage escalation. If a patient cannot tolerate the 25 mg once-daily maintenance dosage, the label says to consider switching therapy to the weekly Wegovy subcutaneous injection at 1.7 mg.

Switching Between the Pill and the Injection

Patients taking WEGOVY 2.4 mg injection for cardiovascular risk reduction or weight reduction in adults may switch to WEGOVY 25 mg tablets. To make this transition, the patient discontinues the weekly injection and initiates the 25 mg oral tablets once daily one week after the final injection.

Patients transitioning from oral Wegovy 25 mg tablets to the injectable formulation start Wegovy 2.4 mg subcutaneous injection once weekly on the day immediately following their final 25 mg tablet. For patients who cannot tolerate the 25 mg maintenance tablet, clinicians may consider switching them to the 1.7 mg once-weekly subcutaneous injection. Switching is a prescriber decision.

Contraindications and Warnings

The label lists contraindications and a boxed warning. In rodents, semaglutide caused dose-dependent and treatment-duration-dependent thyroid C-cell tumors at clinically relevant exposures. While it is unknown whether Wegovy causes thyroid C-cell tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in humans, the medication carries a boxed warning and is contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of MTC.

WEGOVY is also contraindicated in patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) or a history of serious hypersensitivity to semaglutide or any tablet excipients. Serious reactions, including anaphylaxis and angioedema, have been reported. The label lists these symptoms of thyroid tumors: a mass in the neck, persistent hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath.

Using Wegovy tablets or injections alongside other semaglutide-containing medications or any other GLP-1 receptor agonist is not recommended. The label says to monitor blood glucose before starting WEGOVY and during treatment in patients with diabetes mellitus. Read the label: the FDA-approved WEGOVY prescribing information (revised 12/2025) and DailyMed: WEGOVY label (current version).

Side Effects Seen in the Tablet Trial

In the label's clinical trial of WEGOVY 25 mg tablets (up to 64 weeks), 6.9% of tablet-treated participants permanently discontinued therapy due to adverse reactions, compared to 5.9% of participants receiving a placebo. Gastrointestinal adverse reactions were the most common reason for permanent discontinuation, leading to treatment cessation in 3.4% of tablet recipients compared to 2.0% in the placebo group.

The label says to follow the dosage escalation to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal adverse reactions. In addition to digestive symptoms, 4.9% of tablet-treated patients reported dysesthesia reactions, such as sensitive skin, tingling, or burning sensations, compared to 0% of placebo-treated patients. What to Do With This Information

Talk to your prescriber or pharmacist about your plan, and read the Medication Guide that comes with the medicine. Dosing schedules, escalation pauses, and formulation switches are decisions your prescriber makes. WEGOVY is contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of MTC or MEN 2. Using WEGOVY tablets with other semaglutide products or any other GLP-1 receptor agonist is not recommended.

What to Look For in a Body-Composition Scale

A bioimpedance scale trends body fat and muscle rather than just weight — useful when the number stalls but your composition is improving. The absolute body-fat % isn't lab-accurate, so use it for TRENDS at a consistent time of day. Choose one that syncs to an app so you can watch the trend line.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Wegovy pill dosing schedule?

The FDA-approved schedule begins with a starting dosage of 1.5 mg taken orally once daily for days 1 through 30. Dosage escalation continues with 4 mg once daily for days 31 through 60, followed by 9 mg once daily for days 61 through 90. Beginning on day 91, patients transition to the recommended maintenance dosage of 25 mg once daily. Clinicians may consider delaying dosage escalation if a patient experiences tolerability difficulties during titration.

How do I take the Wegovy pill?

Take one tablet orally once daily on an empty stomach in the morning with up to 4 ounces of water. Do not take the tablet with other liquids besides water. Swallow the tablet whole without splitting, crushing, chewing, or dissolving it. After taking the tablet, wait at least 30 minutes before eating food, drinking other beverages, or taking any other oral medications.

What happens if I miss a dose of the Wegovy pill?

If you miss a dose of Wegovy tablets, skip the missed dose and take the next dose the following day. Do not take more than one tablet per day.

Can I switch from the Wegovy injection to the pill?

The label says patients taking WEGOVY 2.4 mg injection for cardiovascular risk reduction or weight reduction in adults may switch to WEGOVY 25 mg tablets. The transition requires initiating the 25 mg tablets once daily one week after discontinuing the 2.4 mg injection. Patients switching from 25 mg tablets to injections begin 2.4 mg subcutaneous injections once weekly the day after stopping tablets, or 1.7 mg injections if tablets were not tolerated.

What is the maintenance dose of the Wegovy pill?

The recommended maintenance dosage of the Wegovy pill is 25 mg taken orally once daily, starting on day 91 of therapy. If a patient does not tolerate the 25 mg once-daily maintenance dosage, the prescribing information directs clinicians to consider switching to the weekly Wegovy 1.7 mg subcutaneous injection.
