Scope of the Updated Systematic Review

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) produce substantial weight loss in adults with overweight or obesity who do not have diabetes. Researchers from [Jewish General Hospital](https://www.jgh.ca) and [McGill University](https://www.mcgill.ca) led an updated systematic review evaluating these therapies. The study appeared in the [Annals of Internal Medicine](https://www.acpjournals.org/journal/aim) via the [American College of Physicians](https://www.acponline.org).

The research team analyzed 38 randomized controlled trials comprising 25,816 adult participants. Fourteen of these trials were newly identified since the prior review version. The expanded dataset accounted for novel agents and growing trial data across the field.

Weight Reduction Across Current and Emerging Agents

Participants receiving active GLP-1 RAs lost more weight than those on placebo across all 38 trials. Tirzepatide produced the greatest weight loss among currently available medications. Emerging experimental drugs showed even larger effects.

Some investigational treatments produced weight loss exceeding 20 percent of baseline weight. The analyzed studies evaluated both injectable and oral formats. These results broaden options for non-diabetic weight management.

Changes in Body Mass Index and Blood Pressure

Trial participants experienced reductions across multiple metabolic measurements including waist circumference and blood pressure. Beyond weight loss, researchers tracked changes in body mass index (BMI). Reductions in waist circumference and blood pressure appeared across both standard and experimental regimens.

All 38 trials excluded individuals with diabetes. This design isolates obesity treatment effects from blood sugar control protocols.

Gastrointestinal Effects and Safety Findings

Gastrointestinal adverse effects remained the most common complications across all evaluated therapies. Digestive reactions matched patterns seen in previous clinical reviews. Serious adverse events and deaths were rare.

Investigators identified no new safety concerns in the updated review. Overall safety profiles held steady across novel agents.

Practical Considerations for Weight Management

Patients considering these medications should consult a personal clinician to assess individual suitability. Approved medications like tirzepatide require a prescription and ongoing clinical oversight. Experimental compounds that exceeded 20 percent weight loss remain in clinical testing.

Those investigational agents are not yet cleared for public use. Individuals interested in GLP-1 receptor agonists should schedule an appointment with their clinician to review whether currently available medications fit their metabolic health profile.

What to Look For in a Body-Composition Scale

A bioimpedance scale trends body fat and muscle rather than just weight — useful when the number stalls but your composition is improving. The absolute body-fat % isn't lab-accurate, so use it for TRENDS at a consistent time of day. Choose one that syncs to an app so you can watch the trend line.
