Medication adherence tied to lower cardiovascular risk
A Denmark registry study links long-term diabetes medication adherence with lower rates of heart attack and stroke in type 2 diabetes.
What happened: a 10-year look at adherence and heart risk
Researchers at the University of Copenhagen and collaborators tracked long-term diabetes medication adherence and later cardiovascular outcomes in people with type 2 diabetes.
Using Denmark’s national health registries, the team followed nearly 80,000 adults for 10 years and linked consistent use of prescribed glucose-lowering therapy with fewer major heart and circulatory complications.

What the evidence shows about medication adherence and cardiovascular risk
This was a nationwide cohort study that grouped people into three adherence patterns using a statistical method applied to monthly pharmacy records over a decade.
Compared with high adherence, persistently low adherence was linked to higher rates of major cardiovascular events, and moderate adherence was linked to a smaller but still higher rate.

Medication adherence and cardiovascular risk in younger adults
The association between low adherence and cardiovascular risk was strongest among younger adults in this study.
Low adherence in younger adults was linked to a 73% higher rate of having a cardiovascular event before age 55 compared with consistent users.

Practical context for metabolic health: why people miss meds
The study suggests medication adherence is not only a “willpower” issue, because the low-adherence group was more likely to face social and health pressures.
After adjusting for factors such as living alone, lower income, and other chronic conditions, the researchers still found higher cardiovascular risk among people who were less adherent.

Limitations and what this study can—and can’t—prove
This research was observational, so it identifies associations between adherence patterns and cardiovascular outcomes, not proof that improving adherence alone will prevent heart attack or stroke.
The study focused on adults in Denmark who were newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and started noninsulin glucose-lowering medication between 2005 and 2012, so results may not match other settings or treatment pathways.
