Gestational Diabetes Linked to Earlier, More Severe Type 2 Diabetes
Women with a history of gestational diabetes develop type 2 diabetes nearly 13 years earlier and are more likely to need insulin soon after diagnosis.
Study Finds Early and Severe Type 2 Diabetes After Gestational Diabetes
A new study presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) annual meeting shows that women who had gestational diabetes during pregnancy are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes almost 13 years earlier than those without this history.
The research also found that these women are twice as likely to require insulin treatment for type 2 diabetes within the first two years after diagnosis.
Research Details: Cohort and Methods
The study used data from the Danish Center for Strategic Research in Type 2 Diabetes (DD2) cohort, which includes many people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes across Denmark.
Researchers compared 173 women with a history of gestational diabetes to 2,692 women without such a history, all of whom had previously been pregnant.
Key Findings: Age, Insulin Use, and Disease Markers
Women with previous gestational diabetes were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at a median age of 43.5 years, compared to 56.3 years for women without gestational diabetes. About 40% of women with prior gestational diabetes developed type 2 diabetes before age 40, versus just 6% of women without.
At enrollment, 10.4% of women with prior gestational diabetes were on insulin, compared to 5.2% of those without. These women also had lower fasting serum C-peptide levels, suggesting reduced insulin production and a more severe disease course.
What This Means for Metabolic Health Management
Body mass index (BMI) and blood sugar control were similar between the two groups, and rates of kidney, nerve, and cardiovascular complications did not differ significantly.
The findings highlight the need for enhanced monitoring and follow-up for women with a history of gestational diabetes, as they may face earlier and more severe type 2 diabetes.
Limitations and Considerations
The DD2 cohort represents many, but not all, newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes cases in Denmark, so results may not generalize to all populations.
While a difference in diabetic retinopathy was observed, small numbers prevented assessment of its clinical relevance. The study did not find significant differences in other diabetes complications at enrollment.
