Early Sugar Intake Linked to Cancer Risk and Aging Decades Later
A study of postwar British birth cohorts finds that lower sugar exposure before age two is tied to reduced cancer rates, slower biological aging, and healthier adult diets.
Study Used Postwar Sugar Rationing as a Natural Experiment
Researchers used Britain’s post-World War II sugar rationing to study how early-life sugar exposure affects long-term health. The end of rationing in 1953 led to a sharp increase in sugar intake, creating a natural division among children born just months apart.
The study included data from over 64,000 people born in Britain between 1951 and 1956. Those born earlier spent more of their first 1,000 days (from conception to age two) under rationing, while those born later had greater sugar exposure.
Lower Early-Life Sugar Exposure Linked to Reduced Cancer Risk
People who experienced longer periods of sugar rationing during their first 1,000 days had lower rates of five types of cancer: breast, prostate, liver, rectal, and lung cancer.
The strongest effect was seen in liver cancer, with rates about 69% lower in those with the least early sugar exposure. For breast cancer, the reduction was 36%. These differences only became apparent decades after the rationing period.
Slower Biological Aging Observed in Low-Sugar Cohorts
The study found that people with less early sugar exposure showed signs of slower biological aging. This was measured by longer telomere length and lower levels of granzyme B, a protein linked to immune system activity.
The telomere difference was equivalent to about 2.2 years of slower aging at the cellular level, suggesting that early nutrition may have lasting effects on how the body ages.
Early Diet Shaped Adult Eating Habits for Decades
Participants who had less sugar before age two continued to eat less sugar and had healthier, more diverse diets around age 50. They also ate less food overall.
The findings suggest that early exposure to sweetness may shape taste preferences and eating patterns for much of a person’s life.
Implications and Limitations for Metabolic Health
The study’s findings highlight the potential long-term impact of early-life sugar intake on cancer risk, aging, and dietary habits. However, the research is observational and relies on natural variations in sugar exposure due to rationing, not randomized assignment.
While the results suggest a link between early sugar exposure and later health, they do not prove causation. Other factors from the postwar period could also have influenced outcomes.
