Early Statin Use After Type 2 Diabetes Tied to Lower Dementia Risk
A nationwide Danish observational study found lower 10-year dementia risk when statins were started within one year of type 2 diabetes diagnosis.

The investigators examined whether starting low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)-lowering statins soon after type 2 diabetes diagnosis was linked to future dementia diagnoses, given that elevated LDL-C is common in type 2 diabetes and diabetes is a highlighted risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia.

The analysis used Danish registers to identify 132,585 statin-naive individuals who developed type 2 diabetes from 2006 through 2019, with follow-up through the end of 2021, and searched medical records for diagnoses of all-cause dementia.
The researchers used analysis methods intended to emulate a randomized trial and reduce some bias seen in observational studies, then compared dementia incidence across timing groups for statin initiation relative to diabetes diagnosis.
