Cash Transfers Changed an Aging Indicator at Age 4
Higher cash transfers caused a small change in an epigenetic indicator of biological aging in children. The indicator has been associated with better health in adulthood, but the study did not establish that the children will have better adult health.
The [study](https://doi.org/10.1038/s41562-026-02568-4), published in Nature Human Behaviour, followed families during the first four years of each child's life. Researchers found no evidence of a comparable biological-aging difference among the mothers.
The Randomized Trial Included 1,000 Low-Income Mothers
The Baby's First Years study randomly assigned 1,000 low-income mothers to receive either $333 or $20 each month. Both payments were unconditional and continued during the first four years of the child's life.
Researchers examined the epigenome, which includes biological mechanisms that regulate gene expression. The randomized controlled design allowed the researchers to attribute the small difference between the child groups to the higher payment rather than measured outside factors.
Cash Transfers Produced Mixed Results Across Earlier Measures
Earlier findings from Baby's First Years did not show consistent changes across child health and development measures. Previous reports found no group differences in several measures of children's health, cognition, or behavior.
Mothers receiving the higher payment spent more money and time on activities with their young children. An earlier analysis also found that the intervention may have increased fast-paced brain activity in patterns associated with later cognitive development.
The Metabolic Health Link Remains Indirect
The trial did not report a direct effect on blood sugar, insulin resistance, or another specific metabolic outcome. Its relevance to metabolic health comes from an epigenetic aging indicator associated with the pace of adult aging and the timing of disease onset.
Epigenetic measures can respond to stress, nutrition, and aging. The study shows that financial support can affect one biological measure during early childhood, but it does not identify which household or biological pathway produced the difference.
The Long-Term Health Meaning Is Unknown
The epigenetic difference was small, and researchers do not know whether it will persist as the children grow older. They also do not yet know whether the measure recorded at age 4 will predict disease, longevity, or other adult health outcomes in this group.
The finding applies to low-income mothers and their young children in this randomized trial. Families interested in cash transfers and biological aging can follow later Baby's First Years results and discuss childhood stress, nutrition, and growth with a clinician.
