Does TRICARE Cover Wegovy for Weight Loss Treatment?

Medically reviewed by Dr. Michael Teplitsky, MD Last reviewed 2026-10-16

Eligible plans, prior authorization and the 100% member cost, as TRICARE states them

TRICARE's pharmacy FAQ lists Wegovy, Saxenda and Zepbound for weight management on named plans, with clinical criteria and prior authorization. Members pay all of the cost even when approved. TRICARE For Life is excluded, and Ozempic is covered for type 2 diabetes only.

TRICARE covers Wegovy for weight management under listed plans when its requirements are met. Members pay 100% of weight loss drug costs even with an approved prior authorization. The listed plans include TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Select.TRICARE's pharmacy FAQ, last updated August 6, 2026, also lists Saxenda and Zepbound for weight management. Members must meet clinical criteria and have a network provider's prescription, and the provider must complete prior authorization paperwork. TRICARE For Life beneficiaries are excluded from this weight-management benefit.

Want medical weight loss instead of another diet?

Opt Health prescribes and monitors GLP-1 therapy against real labs — insulin, A1C, lipids, thyroid, hormones — so the plan fits your physiology rather than a generic protocol. Medication ships to your door.

Plans Covered for Weight Management

TRICARE lists the following plans for its weight-management drug benefit. The same FAQ states that members pay the full drug cost even when prior authorization is approved.

  • TRICARE Prime
  • TRICARE Prime Remote
  • US Family Health Plan
  • TRICARE Select
  • TRICARE Young Adult
  • TRICARE Reserve Select
  • TRICARE Retired Reserve
  • Continued Health Care Benefit Program

Membership in a listed plan is only one requirement. TRICARE also requires its clinical criteria to be met, a prescription from a network provider, and provider-completed prior authorization paperwork. Saxenda has an additional medical necessity form requirement.TRICARE For Life beneficiaries and individuals with direct care coverage are not covered by this benefit. TRICARE's FAQ also identifies certain other groups as excluded. Questions about a specific eligibility group can be directed to TRICARE using its weight-management and diabetes drug FAQ.

Requirements and Prior Authorization

TRICARE Wegovy coverage requires clinical eligibility, a network-provider prescription, and a prior authorization form completed by the provider. TRICARE lists the same requirements for Zepbound and Saxenda, with an additional medical necessity form for Saxenda.

Weight-Management DrugClinical and Prescription RequirementsRequired Forms
WegovyTRICARE clinical criteria and a network-provider prescriptionPrior authorization
SaxendaTRICARE clinical criteria and a network-provider prescriptionPrior authorization and medical necessity
ZepboundTRICARE clinical criteria and a network-provider prescriptionPrior authorization

The FAQ assigns completion of the prior authorization form to the provider. For Saxenda, the medical necessity form is an additional requirement alongside prior authorization. The published FAQ does not provide the clinical cutoffs used to determine eligibility.

Approval does not remove the stated member-cost requirement. TRICARE says members pay 100% of the cost of weight loss drugs even with approved prior authorization. The FAQ gives no dollar price for Wegovy, Saxenda, or Zepbound.

Plan-specific requirements and cost details should be confirmed with TRICARE through its pharmacy FAQ.

Ozempic and Mounjaro for Type 2 Diabetes

TRICARE covers Ozempic, Mounjaro, Trulicity, and Victoza to treat type 2 diabetes, rather than for weight loss. These medicines appear under the diabetes requirements in TRICARE's FAQ. They are separate from its listing of Wegovy, Saxenda, and Zepbound for weight management.

For the diabetes medicines, TRICARE requires members to meet its clinical criteria. The provider must complete prior authorization and medical necessity forms, subject to the stated Trulicity prior authorization exception. The FAQ does not extend Ozempic or Mounjaro coverage to weight loss.

Trulicity has a lower copayment, according to TRICARE's FAQ. A prior authorization form is not required for Trulicity when the TRICARE pharmacy record documents another diabetes drug within the last 720 days.

The FAQ does not give a dollar amount for Trulicity's lower copayment. Its 100% member-cost statement concerns weight loss drugs, so it does not state a Wegovy price. Related: Ozempic insurance coverage.

TRICARE For Life and Medicare

TRICARE For Life beneficiaries are not covered by the weight-management benefit described in TRICARE's FAQ. The FAQ provides a separate note about Medicare Part D for this group. TRICARE For Life does not appear in the list of plans eligible for the TRICARE weight-management benefit.

According to that note, Medicare Part D covers certain weight loss drugs under Medicare's Bridge Program as of July 1, 2026. The wording refers to certain drugs and does not establish coverage for every weight loss medicine.

For people without Part D who want that coverage, TRICARE's FAQ directs them to Medicare.gov for enrollment timing. The related internal page is Medicare and Zepbound.

What the TRICARE Page Does Not Say

TRICARE's FAQ does not publish dollar prices, body mass index cutoffs, or overseas-specific rules for this benefit. The page states that clinical criteria apply, but it does not supply numerical eligibility thresholds. A specific threshold cannot be taken from this FAQ.

The 100% member-cost statement also does not establish a dollar price for a prescription. No Wegovy price or weight-management copayment amount appears in the FAQ. The separate statement that Trulicity has a lower copayment supplies no dollar amount either.

Overseas-specific coverage details are another item the FAQ leaves unpublished. Questions about clinical eligibility, prescription costs, or overseas rules should be directed to TRICARE or the Express Scripts military pharmacy. Medical questions belong with a licensed clinician.

What to Look For in a Body-Composition Scale

A bioimpedance scale trends body fat and muscle rather than just weight — useful when the number stalls but your composition is improving. The absolute body-fat % isn't lab-accurate, so use it for TRENDS at a consistent time of day. Choose one that syncs to an app so you can watch the trend line.

Does TRICARE cover Zepbound?

Yes. Zepbound is listed alongside Wegovy and Saxenda for weight management under the eligible TRICARE plans. Requirements include meeting clinical criteria, having a network-provider prescription, and having the provider complete prior authorization paperwork. Members pay 100% of the drug cost even with approval.

Does TRICARE cover Ozempic for weight loss?

No. TRICARE's FAQ lists Ozempic coverage for type 2 diabetes, rather than for weight loss. The diabetes requirements include meeting clinical criteria and having the provider complete prior authorization and medical necessity forms. Mounjaro, Trulicity, and Victoza also appear in the diabetes coverage listing.

Does TRICARE For Life cover weight loss drugs?

TRICARE For Life beneficiaries are excluded from the weight-management benefit described in the FAQ. TRICARE separately notes that Medicare Part D covers certain weight loss drugs under Medicare's Bridge Program as of July 1, 2026. Its FAQ directs people without Part D to Medicare.gov for enrollment timing.

Do members pay anything with an approved prior authorization?

Yes. TRICARE states that members pay 100% of the cost of weight loss drugs even with an approved prior authorization. Approval does not change that published cost requirement. The FAQ provides no dollar price, so the percentage cannot be converted into a prescription price from the FAQ alone.
