Oral Semaglutide Adoption Outpaced Injectables at Launch
National prescription data shows the Wegovy pill topped 100,000 new monthly fills by its second month without lowering injectable fills.
National Prescription Data Evaluates Early Adoption
Researchers evaluated early adoption patterns for oral semaglutide using national pharmacy records. The analysis reviewed monthly new prescriptions from July 2020 through June 2026 from the IQVIA National Prescription Audit. Investigators focused specifically on branded weight management therapies.
The research team was led by Dr. Yara Jelwan at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Baltimore. The findings appeared online in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine on October 13, 2026. The study compared the oral Wegovy pill against injectable semaglutide sold as Wegovy and injectable tirzepatide sold as Zepbound.
Oral Semaglutide Prescriptions Exceeded 100,000 in Two Months
New prescriptions for the oral formulation expanded rapidly following its January 2026 release. Fills exceeded 100,000 new prescriptions by the second month after market entry. The initial uptake slope outpaced both older injectable options.
Launch-aligned analyses showed the initial adoption curve was roughly 4.4 times steeper than injectable tirzepatide. That same curve was roughly 7.4 times steeper than injectable semaglutide. Overall demand across all tracked incretin-based weight therapies expanded over the full study window.
Injectable Fills Remained Stable with Oral Options
The introduction of an oral tablet did not reduce existing demand for injectable options. Prescriptions for injectable semaglutide continued to grow after the pill became available. Prescriptions for injectable tirzepatide also continued an upward trend.
The tablet formulation drove much of the net increase in total semaglutide volume rather than replacing injections. This pattern indicates that oral availability expanded the total treatment pool. Patients and prescribers selected the oral option without abandoning established injectable regimens.
Study Limitations and Shifting Clinical Context
Short-term adoption rates may not reflect long-term prescribing patterns. The study authors noted that these early trends might not remain durable as the therapeutic market changes. In addition, one author on the research team disclosed financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry.
The audit examined filled prescriptions rather than treatment adherence, side effects, or actual weight outcomes over time. Individuals reviewing weight management options should talk to a clinician about which formulation suits their medical history.
What to Look For in a Body-Composition Scale
A bioimpedance scale trends body fat and muscle rather than just weight — useful when the number stalls but your composition is improving. The absolute body-fat % isn't lab-accurate, so use it for TRENDS at a consistent time of day. Choose one that syncs to an app so you can watch the trend line.
