Diet Shifts Lowered Biological Age Scores in Four Weeks
Older adults who lowered their intake of dietary fat or animal protein showed lower biological age scores after four weeks of dietary intervention. Biological age estimates physiological condition through measurable physical markers rather than elapsed calendar years.
The findings come from a clinical trial led by Dr. Caitlin Andrews at the University of Sydney School of Life and Environmental Sciences. Dr. Andrews published the trial data in the journal Aging Cell after evaluating 104 older Australian adults at the Charles Perkins Centre.
Trial Design and the Four Nutritional Protocols
The Nutrition for Healthy Living study enrolled non-smoking adults aged 65 to 75 with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 20 and 35. Participants were free of major medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, active cancers, kidney disease, liver disease, and food intolerances.
Researchers randomly assigned volunteers to one of four nutritional plans for four weeks. Every test diet fixed total protein intake at 14 percent of total daily calories.
Two diets were omnivorous, drawing half of their protein from animal products and half from plants. The remaining two diets were semi-vegetarian, drawing 70 percent of protein from plant sources. Within each protein category, investigators assigned participants to either a higher-fat, lower-carbohydrate ratio or a lower-fat, higher-carbohydrate ratio.
- Omnivorous high-fat (OHF): 50 percent animal protein with higher fat and lower carbohydrates
- Omnivorous high-carbohydrate (OHC): 14 percent protein, 28 to 29 percent fat, and 53 percent carbohydrates
- Semi-vegetarian high-fat (VHF): 70 percent plant protein with higher fat and lower carbohydrates
- Semi-vegetarian high-carbohydrate (VHC): 70 percent plant plant protein with lower fat and higher carbohydrates
Biomarker Outcomes Across the Test Groups
Researchers calculated biological age by evaluating 20 blood markers of metabolism, inflammation, and cardiovascular function. These measurements included circulating cholesterol, fasting insulin, and C-Reactive Protein (CRP), which serves as a routine marker of systemic inflammation.
Three of the four dietary groups produced reductions in calculated biological age scores by the end of the trial. The omnivorous high-fat group showed no meaningful change, matching the baseline diet participants consumed before the intervention.
The omnivorous high-carbohydrate group produced the strongest statistical evidence of reduced biological age. Participants in that cohort consumed 14 percent of energy from protein, 28 to 29 percent from fat, and 53 percent from carbohydrates.
Trial Boundaries and Metabolic Interpretation
A decrease in an algorithmic biological age score does not confirm permanent reversal of human aging. The University of Sydney trial monitored participants for four weeks, leaving unknown whether these blood marker improvements endure over longer periods or lower long-term disease incidence.
